Kosovo to provide free efficient light bulbs

Prishtina, KOSOVO – Kosovo Ministry of Mining and Energy (MEM) has decided to provide free energy efficient light bulbs to consumers of electric energy. Households will get four free light bulbs whereas commercial users six.

The distribution will start in October and end by January of 2009.

This project will cost around 1.5 million euro and Government of Kosovo will subsidize 10-20% of the cost. With this move MEM expects to save the amount of electricity that one generator of Kosovo’s old coal power plant Kosova A produces, or 15 million euro a year.

Kosovo’s energy infrastructure is in shambles due to negligence under the Serb regime before the war and short term planning and underinvestment since then.
