Prishtina, 30 January 2007 – Four prestigious German and Swiss companies have expressed interest in building a company that recycles waste and turns it into energy in Kosovo. However, UNMIK ist delaying the decision to allow this investment.
A conference on this topic took place on Friday at Grand Hotel with the participation of the above-mentioned companies.
Head of Kosovo Agency for Environmental Protection Ilir Morina informed that these companies have been waiting for over a year for a reply from the Kosovo leaders, “however the problem is that waste management is a reserved competence of UNMIK and we do not have access.”
Morina also said this would be the last time these companies came to Kosovo as they have come in March last year and are still waiting. According to him, their patience is coming to an end.
“Kosovo urgently needs waste management as it produces all sorts of waste and a good management in this regard would bring economic development for Kosovo,” stated Secretary of Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning Muhamet Aliu. It is the primary responsibilities of every city municipality to make sure to segregate waste and recycle.

The German Company “Maschinen und Anlagebau” has come to Kosovo with the project to recycle waste into diesel. According to the Kosovo Agency for Environmental Protection, through this project energy sources would be ensured and Kosovo would be able to cover 20% of the local market with diesel.
A representative of the Swiss Company “Hilous and LC east-west”, Gani Musliaj, praised the work of the Kosovo Government, but assessed that the international representatives are quite slow in reaching a decision. The project deals with the elimination of organic waste and the production of natural gas and “Brkiet” product.
