Kosovo: First Duty-Free-Shop opened at Prishtina Airport

Prishtina, Nov 6, 2005 – Pristina International Airport’s first duty free shop was officially opened today at a ceremony attended by senior management and key officials from EU Pillar IV, KTA, CARO and UNMIK Customs Service. The winner of the 10 year concession contract to operate the shop was officially announced. After strong competition among local and international companies, the contract was awarded to Aer Rianta International Kosovo LLC, a subsidiary of Irish firm Aer Rianta International (ARI).

At the ceremony, Bjorn Hauksson, Interim Managing Director, Pristina International Airport, stated: “This first duty free shop plays a very important role in helping the airport to generate much needed non-aeronautical revenues. These revenues will be reinvested in the further development of airport facilities and infrastructure. We are delighted to be working with Aer Rianta International. ARI are recognized as world leaders in the duty free business with an impressive track record.”

Eamon Foley, ARI Director General, commented: “That the shop is up and running on time demonstrates our effectiveness when starting up new businesses in previously untested locations. Of course, this milestone could not have been reached without the support of Pristina International Airport.”

Initially the shop will measure over 60 square meters and cover the main duty free retail categories. Future expansions are planned.
