Kosovo Railways can reach EU standards

Prishtina, 1 February 2007 – Representatives of the London-based company Cross Tube Rail. Ltd presented yesterday in Prishtina their company, which deals with railways construction and maintenance. The Director of the company said the purpose of their visit to Kosovo is to urge the Kosovo Government to undertake steps in construction of the railways.

“Our arrival here would result in the employment of 400 persons, who would receive salaries, while social cases would be our priority,” said Hajdini. He added that he came to Kosovo to apply the standards, which in Kosovo do not exist, since the railways are old.

Expert on railways, Bernard O’Donell, said that during his stay in Kosovo he saw that the railway infrastructure in Kosovo is in a very good state, but there are problems with financial means, maintenance and the lack of staff.

Kosovo has 333 kilometers of railways with 50 kilometers being non-functional.
