Kosovo: Mobikos reaches agreement with Americans

Prishtinë, Nov 25, 2005 – The Mobikos-Mobitel consortium, who is runing for the licence of the second mobile operator in Kosovo, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the well-known American company Harris to use the services of this company to construct a network for the second mobile operator, although the operator has not been selected yet.

The director of this consortium, Fatmir Gashi, told “Lajm” that this is not a hasty decision, although the Government of Kosovo has decided to re-evaluate the tender.

“Certainly it is not too early”, said Gashi. “We are determining the details in order to sign an agreement. We will win the tender, because the two previous international evaluations also declared Mobitel-Mobikos the winner. We believe that we will also win this time.”

The first tender on second mobile operator was canceled in August 2004. The former Minister of Telecommunications Zef Morina canceled the tender after UNMIK, the Kosovo Government and international auditors suggested that there were violation of procedures during the tendering process, decision which was disregarded by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).
