Kosovo: land expropriation delays highway construction

Prishtina, 31 January 2007 – A spokesperson of the Kosovar Ministry of Transport and Telecommunication (MTT), said that legal infrastructure is the main obstacle for the construction of the Prishtina-Durres highway, connecting Kosovo with Albania. According to him, for the time being the MTT is considering the compensation of the land where the highway will be constructed.

“A feasibility study is done, while the project implementation will begin once the Kosovar Assembly passes the Law on Land Expropriation, which is expected in the next session of the Assembly,” said Mr. Ukaj, the spokesperson of MTT.

According to Ukaj, the highway construction is expected to cost around €600 million. Meanwhile, a German company, which is engaged in this project, considers that the highway construction will require more than €920 million.
