Kosovo: Brezovica requests loans for the winter season

Prishtinë, Dec 4, 2007 – The Skiing centre in Brezovica cannot start preparing for the winter season due to lack of money. Ekrem Tahiri, KTA Spokesperson, told the daily that the management of the skiing centre has asked KTA to support them with a loan that could cover the preparation expenses. “It is obvious that the value of a skiing centre is higher when is active and, within our frame of resources, we will support the management of the SOE,” said Tahiri. He added the KTA does not deal with micromanagement of enterprises but in this case the KTA has discussed with Kosovar banks and is trying to provide a sufficient capital to cover the maintenance and safety measures. He was not able to provide figures of the loan since that falls under the agreement between the bank and the enterprise. Nevertheless Tahiri did not exclude the possibility that the skiing centre might not get the fund and risk the opening of the season. The skiing complex has not yet announced an opening date for the season, though unofficially it is said that they are trying to finish all preparations by 20 December.

The unresolved status of the complex has left both, the enterprise and the season organization, to the mercy of the managing company “Inex”, which is continuing to face financial troubles.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) has no competences to monitor the work of the tourist centre while it is managed by the KTA. “Brezovica is under the KTA and we have no right to get involved,” said Bekim Beka from Department of Tourism in MTI. According to him, the MTI has never requested to verify whether the tows are safe or engaged a company for their repair.
