Kosovo signs the contract for highway construction

The Kosovo Government has signed a contract worth €700 million, with the American-Turkish consortium, “Bechtel & Enka” to construct the highway from Vermice to Merdare, which connects Kosovo with Albania in the south and Serbia in the north.

Founds for implementation of the project, according to Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, will be provided from the Kosovo budget, donors and loans.

On behalf of the Government, the contract was signed by the Transport Minister, Fatmir Limaj, and on behalf of the consortium “Bechtel & Enka”, Michael Adams and Sinan Tara.

The signing ceremony was also attended by the Ambassadors of United States, Great Britain and Turkey.

Prime Minister Thaci described this as a realization of Kosovo dream.

“This highway project Vermice-Prizren-Pristina-Merdare helps citizens by creating new opportunities of free movement and integrates Kosovo in the region,” Thaci said.

According to the minister Limaj, with this highway Kosovo is linked with Europe and is becoming a more important factor in the region.

The construction work will begin in the first segment, from Vermice to Duhle.

Highway Vermice-Pristina-Merdare will be 28 meters wide, with two tracks of 3.75 meters, an emergency track of 2.5 meters and the green belt of 3 to 4 meters in between.
