Prishtina, 20 April 2007 – The Kosovo Forest Agency (KFA) publishes alarming data on Kosovo forests. The head of KFA Muzafer Luma said that only in March and April of this year, 553 hectares of forest caught fire. The main causes are high temperatures and people. Luma appealed to courts to be more effective when it comes to cases submitted by KFA against illegal cutters and fire starters. According to him, by the Law on forests, starting fire in forests is a penal act.
Guards that were responsible for the ruined forests will have to appear at Disciplinary Commissions. Luma stressed that according to the relevant UNMIK regulation guards should be supplied with weapons, but according to the Laws in force forest guards first need to be trained for this issue.
