Kosovo Assembly against sale of Trepca

Prishtinë, August 2, 2007 – The Kosovo Assembly Committee for Economy, Trade, Energy, Transport and Telecommunication has approved on Tuesday a draft resolution on Trepca, requesting that this company should be given the status of a Publicly Owned Enterprise (POE). This draft resolution will be passed on for approval to the Kosovo Assembly by the end of the month.

According to the draft resolution, Trepca is a national treasury of special public and strategic interest for Kosovo, and should be transformed into a POE.

Kosovar media report that in reaction to the KTA idea to reorganize and/or liquidate and privatise Trepca, the draft resolution highlights that “The business complex Trepca cannot go through the reorganisation and liquidation procedure, but should maintain its business integrity and a status of an Enterprise of Special Public Interest.”

The assembly committee has also asserted its full support to the Kosovo government’s stance against the nomination of an administrator responsible for reorganization and liquidation of Trepca. “The Kosovo Assembly requests from the SRSG to respect people’s will as voiced by government and assembly, and asks him to ensure that Trepca gets the status of an Enterprise of Special Public Interest, and also to prevent the procedure of reorganization and liquidation of Trepca,” reads the draft resolution.

In the meantime, media in Kosovo report that the strike announced by the early pensioners of Trepca has been cancelled. This decision came following the promise of the government that Prime Minister Agim Ceku would meet the workers during this week to find a solution to their concerns.
